I'm sorta wondering why you use rsync? It has no advantages over
tar'ing as far as I know. There are a lot of options and possibilities
with tar and compress methods. But if you don't intend to have a
consistently dependable backup on hand, I encourage you to fiddle all
you like.

I'm going to mark this case as closed, because the answer was provided
for the user and I feel it has reached a point of general discussion.
P.S. I also don't like having to convince users to do what they've
asked help to do, rather frusterating.
