No, it wasn't the issue of using rhythmbox or not. The install borked a
good many files and the 'bmuxd msgs halted the install. When I went back
to synaptic to check there were three files marked as broken & I elected
to remove the ifuse that was installed from the ppa; that's when I got
the output in the previous msg. Things are back to normal now as I
purged all of the ppa files (and the ppa from the repo list) and
reinstalled the bits (rhythmbox etc) that got broken.

If I find time tomorrow I'll do the same on a test machine from the cli
so that I can capture all of issues. But I'll add my warning that this
ppa install _may_ cause problems & certainly did for me on my machine.
