If you do not know what you are going to install, then I agree that 
Synaptics is better. People can see the description of what the apps doing.

For me however, the only Ubuntu system that has KVM on is my laptop, 
others are headless. Then apt or aptitude is the only solution.
I use apt because I used Debian previously.
