I assume that you used a package manager to remove '*theme*', and that
has removed some of the core packages that provide the Ubuntu desktop.
Try reinstalling the ubuntu-desktop package - that is the meta-package
that depends on all of the packages that make up the Ubuntu desktop. It
will install all of the important packages that are missing. The
command is
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop
which is probably better done in a text window that the little xterm.
Switch to a virtual terminal with Ctrl-Alt-F1, then log in and try the
reinstall.
Note that this will fetch files from the Internet, rather than using a
CD, unless you add the CD to your sources. If you have the CD for your
distribution, and want to use it for packages that haven't been updated,
you can do so by putting the CD into the CD drive and running the
command
sudo apt-cdrom add
then do the install step as above
