I have Ubuntu Karmic installed(gnome too) and the kubuntu desktop and 
what I suggested has always worked for me.  Maybe I didn't get your 
point clearly?  However, can you offer a gnome app(which I should have 
or will install) so that I can check if it will start with single click.
As I understood from your earlier post, you don't want to install gnome
which I presumed meant you had kubuntu or kubuntu-desktop installed. 
Help me to understand the issue.  Thanks
