flashing monitor

When I log on to 9.1 I can chose one of two users.  When chosing one of them
just not the monitor began to flash.  I could not select any programs.  I
could select things like the calendar on the top panel.  When I shut down,
it warned that there was a program "Unknown" running and I would lose data.
i rebooted with the same result.  I tried fixing broken packages on boot
without any success.

I am using a Dell 10 mini.
