If you want to test this idea with Ubuntu 9.10:

sudo chmod o+w /boot/grub/grub.cfg
sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfk

Comment out those lines that begin with "search --no-floppy"

Turn off the notebook and power back on, see if the CD-ROM now works in
Windows boot.  Hopefully, if it does, it will also now be detected in Linux.
