Hardy Heron 8.04 apt upgrade issues

Hi,
I did an apt upgrade on my HP laptop running Hardy Heron - which
downloaded about 200 Mb and asked me to reboot after installation. I
find that my icons in Open Office have been replaced by text even though
toolbar settings specify 'icon'.
I'm now informed that there are 53 more updates waiting and in addition,
my laptop seems to have slowed down considerably. Is this normal or am I
doing something wrong?
