P. Echols wrote some very good suggestions to make the most efficient use
of this mailing list. All of his suggestions, and more, can also be found
in
"How To Ask Questions The Smart Way"
by Eric Steven Raymond (ESR) and Rick Moen
http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
(I suppose that PE already knows about this page)
I consider these the "standard" guidelines for asking questions on any
technical mailing list, newsgroup, forum or irc channel.
A caution to impatient readers: in printed form it is about 20 pages long,
but it is really worth reading.
Other interesting reading material from Eric S. Raymond includes The
Jargon File (http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/)
also published as
Guy L. Steele, Eric S. Raymond, eds. (1996). The New Hacker's Dictionary
(3rd ed.). MIT Press. ISBN 0-262-68092-0.
Not a necessary read, but quite funny.
