PulseAudio vs. applications

Hi all, I mentioned some of my PulseAudio woes during an earlier
thread but until now haven't cared enough to post about it.
Two applications in particular do not play audio properly on my
system: Warzone2100 and Gizmo.
My system is Ubuntu 9.10 x86-64.
When I start Warzone2100, audio will sometimes work normally for a few
minutes, then cut out. Sometimes it will become choppy and/or fuzzy
first, sometimes it just cuts out. Sometimes there is no audio for
Warzone at all.
Warzone2100 uses OpenAL for audio. OpenAL has known issues with
PulseAudio as mentioned here:
http://www.pulseaudio.org/wiki/PerfectSetup
My installed version of libopenal is 1.8.466 - so PulseAudio should be
supported according to the above article.
When I add "drivers = pulse" to /etc/openal/alsoft.conf, Warzone
stalls on opening, showing a blank, black window which is unresponsive
and must be xkill'd.
Gizmo give no sound at all unless the audio preferences are set to use
OSS and Gizmo is started using "padsp gizmo". Then the sound is choppy
and Gizmo is unusable as a phone.
I thought I had made a forum post about these problems, and I meant to
link it here- but now I can't find it. :(
Btw, I am not a fan of VBulletin.
