When you see the message about Grub starting (as soon as your bios hands
off the boot process to the Hard drive), press ESC key, that should pull
up the grub menu.
One of the items in the menu should be a recovery mode. If you, for
some reason, do not have a recovery mode, press the 'e' key to edit an
entry, move the cursor to the end of the kernel options, delete the
'quiet' and 'splash' options, then append 'single.'
When recent versions of Ubuntu (you didn't specify which you are using)
start in recovery mode, there should be a menu option to fix xorg problems.
