a *license* problem ? thunderbird is licensed under the free MPL, GPL
and LGPL licenses, what makes you think there is a license problem
anywhere, the above link clearly shows the debs for thunderbird 3.0 and
as you point out below:

version 3.0 is obviously in that archive and was updated with the latest
bug and security fixes 11 hours before you opened the page, i know many
people using that package under ubuntu so i would be surprised if a) the
PPA wouldnt work and b) there was any kind of license problem here.
if you just add the PPA to the software sources and validate it properly
with its key as the docs describe thunderbird 3.0 will simply show up in
apt and synaptic.
