System Monitor remains busy for 15 - 20 minutes after startup

My advise would be to run gkrelmm its in the repositories). When well 
configured it gives you - graphically - the load, as well in total as 
per processor and shows the top x processes (in my case 3). You can 
easily see which processor is maximally loaded together with the overall 
load and and which process gives the highest load.
