SCSI scanner sound card conflict

Hi,

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.04 and had to write 
"45-scsi-scanner.rules" to /etc/udev/rules.d/ to get xsane to use my HP 
Scanjet 4P SCSI scanner. However that seems to have caused a conflict 
with my AudioExcel sound card for I can no longer get system sounds or 
play music CD's. If I comment out the lines in 45-scsi-scanner.rules I 
can get sound again.
I need advice as to how to get the scanner and sound working together.
To run xsane as root would not be a good idea.
