About what a user should be done to use Gnu/Linux before first distributions

His question might be what was it like to boot Linux in 1991. What did
you have to know to do it.
What is it like now. What do you have to know now? Sort of a contrast
and compare history question. I am not to sure what the 2 lines are
about.
