File sharing with the CLI

SSH will go through the Internet server right? That means I get that
wonderful choked upload speed of 18kbs or whatever the pathetic rate
is. I was hoping to use the lan (I can do that right?). When we go to
the folders share property and set it to share, then I should somehow
be able to save there from the other machine, right? Being gui, I have
no idea how it works but maybe it is samba??
