How to turn off use of 3d/Visual effects in KDE?

I have a newly installed ubuntu 9.10 system where I have discovered
that I need to turn off 'Visual Effects' in Gnome to prevent the video
drivers crashing (Intel i915).

How do I do the same thing in KDE?  I have installed the KDE desktop
on the same system but it crashes in exactly the same way that the
Gnome desktop did until I turned off Visual Effects in Gnome.  There
isn't a "KDE Failsafe" so I can't do it by using that.
