'Hidden' dot files being shown in file selction browser windows

On a Gnome desktop, when I call upon an 'Open file' dialogue, like the one in 
OpenOffice, I get presented with a 'File browser' from which to choose my files.  
This 'File browser' shows 'dot file' and 'dot directories' like '.bashrc' and 
'.compiz'.

Is there a way to get these 'dot files' to be hidden from file selection 
browsers views?
