installing 32 bit java on 64 bit system

I run a 64 bit ubuntu 9.10, with 64 bit java installed, but have an
application that needs the 32 bit jre.  I assume it's possible for 32 bit
and 64 bit java to coexist - is there a document somewhere that describes
how to install the 32 bit version on a 64 bit Ubuntu; and will the
application automatically be able to detect the right version?
