We all have a public face that we show. The problem is when we give
corporations and governments big chunks of our private face and expect
them to respect our privacy and to go to all ends to keep our data
safe.
Legally firms have one responsibility that they care about above all
else, profit. They give out free stuff just like heroin dealers do and
for the same reasons, profit and addiction to their services. You get
free Gmail because it comes with adds and that makes lots of money. MS
mail fails because people did not like all the crazy visual clutter of
the ads and the mass of spam. What keeps the companies in money will
keep them repeating that behavior. Don't expect it to be in your best
interests, just because it sometimes is.
