Don't get the AVAST! Virus Cleaner mixed up with their anti-virus
software. It does have an on-access scanner. I'm using AVAST on my
Windows Vista laptop right now. Or, are you talking about the Linux
version being just a scanner?

Depends, how much effort is put into keeping ClamAV's virus
definitions up-to-date? AVAST updates automatically several times a
week, and sometimes several times a day.
