No desktop, Best programs?

This is just a rough summary of possibly best suited applications. The
decision what program you prefere to use - it's up to you.
pdmenu, inx and twin are seems to be good approaches to achive what you
have in mind.
bmv, zgv and arachne are good applications for pdf, pictures and web.
Though, I wasn't able to compile or run arachne on x86-64/amd64 hardy -
libsvga(32bit) segfaults and the ggi-version didn't compile. An older
ggi-version extracted from an rpm stalled with
LibGGI: Failed to set mode: 800x600.F1.[C16/16]
moc is a rather good music-player, and mplayer as vlc are both good
mediaplayers.
mutt, ncftp and tin are very good internet applications.
Try a couple of these programs and then make up your mind...
