I was able to create it, but running the calculator and changing its
mode had no effect on the directory and created no content.

Using a different user id I was able to save the mode by running the
calculator, changing it and exiting.  That userid also has no
.gconf/apps/gcalctool directory.

According to the man page, there should be a file ~/.gcalctoolrc for
the settings, but there isn't (anywhere).

I also went in as the other user, checked the date, ran the
calculator, changed its mode, waited until the clock changed and then
did a find for all files in that user's space that changed at the same
time and nothing of real interest showed up.  There were two data
files that changed, but one was a metacity file and one was in
.local/share/gvfs-metadata and I haven't yet figured out what gvfs has
to do with anything local.

Stumped again.
