I just used Rhythmbox to help a friend get her new IPod loaded.

I put all the songs she had in a directory, then started Rhythmbox,
right-clicked on "Music" and selected "Import Folder". Then I browsed to
the folder with her music in it. Finally I right clicked on the IPod
name and selected "Synchronise". That's from memory, so may not be 100%
right, but it was along those lines.

Um - I had to tell Rhythmbox NOT to automatically look for music on my
system, because it took an age and started finding sample music, video
clips, and podcosts! I think it was a preferences option, to start a
serach manually only.

Regards, K.
