No virtual ttys

Georg, I have a Dell laptop and it's almost the same.  I get a blank screen 
with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner and it remains mute/blinking 
no matter what I type.  Only ctrl-alt-f7 restores the desktop.

My wife's Dell is similar only the display goes really weird until c-a-F7 
restores it.  We both run 10.10.  They did the same on 10.04.

Being new to Ubuntu, I thought it was a 'feature.'  The same laptops on 
Opensuse worked fine in that regard.
