My recent experience there suggests Kubuntu's not somewhere to go to
avoid mess - there are distros with far better incarnations of KDE
going, though I must admit I don't know which those are currently. I
know Mepis has been mentioned as such in the past.

Kubuntu is a very poor effort at sticking KDE on Ubuntu - Ubuntu's core
effort is very much in Gnome.
