hand-rolled kernels sometimes work, sometimes not

  i'm going thru the Xorg log files now, but nothing jumps out.  with
this working kernel, i can see that i have the i915 module loaded, as
well as drm_kms_helper.  i'm just trying to identify any obvious
differences right now.  it's frustrating that even the ubuntu-supplied
kernel doesn't work at the moment on this system.
