Pete,
Not sure of your reasons to jump to 3.0, but if you google a bit there 
are tons of 2.x examples and tutorials that will equally get you started 
with Python. I would also recommend the book Beginning Python from 
Novice to Professionals by Magnus Lie Hetland which is primarily 2.x but 
does touch on changes to 3.0 as well.
