Problems loading driver for external antenna

Nils - thanks. Yes, I'm running Ubuntu 10.10.
I've looked up the references, and following the instructions have found that when I type lshw in the terminal I get "... configuration... driver=rtl8187", so it looks like Ubuntu has found and loaded the driver, so perhaps that wasn't the problem after all. The lshw command seems to recognise the external antenna as wlan1. When I go to system-administration-network tools it seems to be pointing to loopback interface, but recognises wlan1. But when I select wlan1 and try to run Firefox it still can't load webpages.
I sense that the solution to my problem is actually very simple, probably just persuading Firefox to look at wlan1 rather than wlan0. Can anyone please help me finally get there?
John
