what do you mean "got stuck"  What is the command output?

Why nut?  my recollection is that gnome-power-manager works "out of the 
box" on a desktop machine, just like on a laptop.  (Sitting at my laptop 
away from my desk at the moment, so I can't check my configuration until 
later . . .)
