You might try:

$ iotop -o -b > iotest.txt

let it run for a few minutes & then stop with a Ctrl-C. Then:

$ gedit iotest.txt

Try it again with a different file name (iotest2.txt) & do a few things
that you know are accessing the disk (Nautilus etc) & then compare to
iotest.txt. Maybe from that you'll be able to pin something down. Good luck.
