Can't shutdown

Sounds as if you are getting stuck in a gdm loop. Check your:
 ~/.xsession-errors and ~/.xsession-errors.old
to see if there is anything obvious. And of course check your /var/log/
- dmesg, messages, syslog etc.

Given that you've already determined that you can shut down from the cli
and also the gdm screen, I wonder if it might be an
indicator-applet-session problem. Things you can try:

- right click the indicator-applet-session on your panel and remove it.
(Note: you can add it back afterwards if you wish - I just find it takes
up too much real estate on the panel to use.) Then use 'System|Shut
Down' to see if that works.

- right click the panel and Add the 'Shut Down' applet and see if it
works from there.
