Can't shutdown

I am not sure that it is really necessary to "look". Linux issues the 
command for any running apps to close and waits until they do before 
shutting down.

Go ALT-CTRL-F3, say, and, as root, issue the "halt" (or even the 
"reboot") command - and watch the messages which come up.

However, if you hit the RESET button or hold down the POWER button to 
shutdown then it's a totally different story.
