The firewire interface enables direct access to the memory. This is a 
security risk and you have to enable it yourself. But it is pretty easy, 
check out this link:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Firewire#Ubuntu%2010.04%20(Lucid%20Lynx)%20and%2010.10%20(Maverick%20Meerkat)

finally add all users which should access the firewire devices to the 
group video.
