Tracking the polling software

Hi all,

I run Ubuntu 10.10 and noticed that my harddisk light lights up every two
seconds or so, which I attribute to some software's polling activity.

I allreay had this in the past and it was linked to HAL polling the disks. But
stopping HAL doesn't stop the polling (or should I reboot?).

I've looked at the system monitor, but with the exception of the
gnome-system-monitor they are all sleeping.

So how could I find out "who" is polling "something" every two seconds?

Thierry
