I've got the exact same setup + versions of gnome-do+pidgin, but I don't
experience the hang you describe. 

Have you tried killing Do (killall gnome-do) and running it from the
terminal, to see if it provides any output when it locks? If not, I'd
try that.

When you do, try launching it as: "gnome-do --debug" to get the verbose
output...
