how PS1 variable is used ?

When i run "set" command i see bunch of variables.
Among them i found "PS1" variable:
PS1='\[\e]0;\u@\h: \w\a\]${debian_chroot:+($debian_chroot)}\u@\h:\w\$ '

how this variable is used ?
