I had 8.3 installed. Perhaps that was the problem.
moseley at tiger:~$ ls -l /etc/postgresql
total 4
drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 2008-05-13 16:45 8.3
moseley at tiger:~$ ls /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3
/etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3
(Can't start because /usr/share/postgresql-common/init.d-functions doesn't
exist any more.)
moseley at tiger:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.3 start
moseley at tiger:~$
Oh, it did get uninstalled by the upgrade:
moseley at tiger:~$ dpkg -l postgresql
