I think the idea might be that because it's under warranty, it can go
back to the manufacturer for a free replacement if it's in once
piece... hence the desire to *not* hit it with a sledgehammer (which
would certainly do the trick without resorting to spraying metal
shards all over the garden from a tree shredder! ;-)  But the data
that was on it is "private" and if the manufacturer has some interest
in spending the time, it *might* be able to restore it, which the OP
would prefer not to happen.
