Running apt-update first seems to have fixed the problem (unless
something else ran in the background somewhere in the meantime).
apt-upgrade reported no problems (except the perennial one I have with
transmission-client upgrades not working - may uninstall and re-install
that one at some point).

Interesting that update manager did not do that for itself.

The reason for reference to the VPN was that my apparent location would
have changed, probably altering the behaviour of mirrors etc. Apart from
the apparent location, the PC is blind to the VPN, since the VPN client
is in the router (using dd-wrt), not the PC, thus avoiding all the
problems I had getting it to work in the PC, but that's a digression.
