What graphic card does the system have?

If nVidia, you might have to add:
Option         "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
in the screen section of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

In any event, google on:

for possible solutions. But given that you are using a non-standard
windows manager (FVWM) perhaps you might be better off checking with
http://www.fvwm.org/ instead?
