Besides the already mentioned unetbootin, there's pendrivelinux. I have
never used either and therefore can't recommend one over the other, but
since the Ubuntu Netbook page

describes creating the USB drive with pendrivelinux, I thought it's
worth mentioning here:

Nothing special is required apart from having enough capacity. 1 GB
should be more than enough.
In fact, the pendrivelinux website lists 2 GB+ as a requirement. Maybe
they're uncompressing stuff from the CD image?

Of course, your machine must be able to boot from USB. Otherwise,
putting the image on the thumb drive would be pretty pointless.
