So it's possible by installing the hplip from hp's website I may have 
inadvertently messed up? If that's the case I'll check the software sources 
for a mention re the hp site and then try to reinstall from the ubuntu 
servers and see if that makes a difference. It was interesting to not even 
get the c4200 series showing in the list after installing the latest hplip 
from hp. I'll give that a go on my friends pc after checking on mine. Still 
the stock standard hplip from the repos on mine so far. Got  a few other 
things to do b4 going to work so will give it a go 2morrow on mine.
