56 k modem

Hi Using 10.04, I run a 56k external modem on my laptop.  This is
running through a usb to serial cable. Using gnome ppp front end for
wvdial
Up to know, and since 6.04, this has never given a problem.
since the last kernal update, it is now dropping the connection, and I
have to reboot for the system to find the modem.

How can I restart the connection with out re-booting
