The current Ubuntu version is 10.04, not 10.4. 10 stands for the year
2010 and 04 for April. It's the release date. Next version will be
released in October this year. I wouldn't be surprised if the version
number will be 10.10 then.

Sorry for your problems, and that I can't help since it was a long
time since I had any sound problems with Ubuntu myself; it was the
very first version I tried (7.04, released in April 2007, but I
installed it a couple of months later). However, I asked here for help
and my problem was solved almost immediately. My problem was of
another kind, though (I heard sound correctly in one channel but only
a high frequency tone in the other – adding a single row in a
configuration file changed that).

Anyway, now that you don't use Ubuntu anymore I guess we all can focus
more on someone else's problem, so I guess we all should thank you for
being helpful to this list.
