One possibility that's often overlooked for backup questions is the
possibility of experiments.

Just take a copy of a small directory subtree (or make one with the
specific properties you need) and run the backup operation(s) on that
subtree.

It's very quick, carries no risk, and lets you determine exactly what
happens when you run certain commands.
