nautilus the graffiti artist

I have a server running lucid that I mostly manage over an ssh session
from my desktop machine. I need to write a CD using the burner on the
server and as an experiment I thought I'd use Nautilus. So I installed
it but when I started it, it changed the colour of the root window on my
 desktop machine.

That seems pretty rude! What right does Nautilus think it has to my
[non-gnome] desktop properties? Have I missed some setting?
