Not worth it. It won't unburden your laptop to any significant degree.

It probably is but external displays won't help - the internal chip
will still be active.
Put the laptop on a proper stand with an external display and keyboard
and mouse. The improved ventilation will help it more. Something like
this, which leaves the underside clear and unobstructed:
