Tom, the most recent updates have included security updates for the
kernel; meaning that a reboot is normally required. Even if you are
doing 'automatic' updates I wouldn't expect the install/update to
automatically reboot your system, but it might be worth checking out.
Try turning off auto update for awhile & see if it makes any difference.
Also check to see if the system hibernates when you do manual updates. I
reckon that you've checked all of your power settings etc., but do you
have any screensavers enabled?
You might also open gconf-editor and search on 'hibernate'
(Edit|Find|check both values and key) and see if there is a setting in
there that may be affecting you. Maybe drastic & I've not tried it, but
maybe just uninstall gnome-power-manager?
