Have you ever used newsgroups? They are something intermediate between
mailing lists and forums. Some forums are actually web interfaces for
mailing lists, and some newsgroups (like gmane) can act as interfaces for
mailing lists. So you could have:
mailing list <--> newsgroup <--> webforum
